Building a Pet Bug-Out Bag
Do you have a pet bug-out bag for Fido? Pet preparedness is one step in your family readiness plan. While you may not be able to take the dog or cats to people shelters, you should not leave them behind either, in the event of natural disaster or evacuation. If you find friends or family members who can keep your family and your pets, you will want to be prepared. The more prepared you are, the less stress you will have even during a very stressful situation. Even when we take Chief with us on a day trip, we grab his pet bug-out bag. In the event that the day doesn’t go as planned, we have his needs covered.

What should be included in the Pet Bug-Out bag for your cat or dog?
Luckily for us, the pets don’t need extra clothing! Think about everything that you use daily in the care of your pet.
Food dish and two to three days of dry or canned food
Water dish and water
Any medication the pet needs (replace yearly with fresh medication)
A copy of veterinary records, vaccination record and Rabies tag number.
leash or harness, training collar, soft muzzle
Favorite type of toy
Favorite treats
Any grooming tools that your pet needs for daily care.
- With food and water, you might be thinking you’ll just buy some where ever you stay or you will just feed your pet people There are two potential problems that I see right away with this plan. One, you may not have a store open during a natural disaster. Two, feeding your pet some unfamiliar food may cause the pet to have an upset stomach. This is something no one wants but it would be even worse during a stressful time.
- Pack all the pet’s needs in a small duffle bag or tote bag and place it with the family’s preparedness materials. In the event of emergency or just when traveling with your pet, bring the pet bug-out bag along.

I have st. bernards and we have a bug out bag. I know we would not be able to keep up with them if there was a bug out. It is so important to think ahead and keep it fresh.
My dogs are well trained, but I do have containment for them in mind.
Rescue rememdy by Bach is VERY important to have with you .. Always.
It is for calming, for people and animals.
Rescue Remedy is a great idea. I agree with you. it should be on the list
Now that is something I hadn’t thought about, but it’s definitely a good thing for those who have pets.
